Sisters ~ I am Beautiful project 2015

Sisters Caitlyn and Brooklynn

so adorable...

When the girls mother first contacted me it was to tell me all about Caitlyn
and how even though she had, had some serious medical issues including
both of her legs being operated on and not knowing
what her limitations were going to be, she never let it get her down.
She worked hard with her physical therapy until she was able to do everything she loved again.
Including bringing home 1st place with the drill team.

Things happened and several months passed before I was able
to speak with mom again to try and set up a time to get together.
She sent me a note that said ~ Caitlyn would love to donate her nomination to her sister.
See, the thing about Caitlyn is she is always giving.
Before I entered your contest. I didn't really know that it was about bullying.

Cait has had to deal with so much in her life and there have been many mean people and many
instances of bullying but because of her nature she never let it get her down.
She just picked herself back up and started over.

Mom went on to tell me a few things about Brooklyn and I knew I had to have both
of these awesome young ladies be apart of the I am Beautiful project.

You could feel the love they have for each other, their kindness and gentleness.
Mom and dad you have raised two extraordinary young ladies
this world is such a better place because of them.
I wish you all, lots of love and happiness. God bless you, thank you and giant hugs to everyone.

You can read Brooklynn's story here

Meet Caitlin our " I am Beautiful " ambassador for August 2015

Caitlin is 17
Hobbies: Drill team
Favorite Foods: Sushi
Favorite color: Pink
Favorite subject: Science

Wants to be a Special Education/ Special needs therapist

Hero: My mother, because she takes care of all five of us and is a very strong and loving person.
Proud of myself for I taking home 1st at last years state meet
and I have fully recovered from double leg surgery.

Bullying- People who decide to pick on others for their differences are attempting to make themselves feel better by making others feel bad.
Realization: Throughout my childhood there have been moments when I have
realized people were mean and attempting to belittle me.
Feeling: I felt upset because I do not like to think I am different than other people.
Help: My parents
How: Helped to make me feel better and continue to tell me I am beautiful.
They also made sure that the bullies never talked about me again
If I could say anything to people being bullied.
I would say to not let other people get to you.
Inside, those people do not have enough self esteem to make themselves feel sufficient
with who they are so they are attempting to make you feel like you are less than
them so they can feel better. You are beautiful inside and out.

What would you like the world to know about you:
I am thankful for the opportunity to help other girls feel better about themselves
and hopefully make a difference!
My family has helped me in so many ways and I am grateful for all of my differences
because they turned me into who I am today.

Such a sweetie thank you so much Caitlin for being apart of the I am Beautiful project.

big hugs, Cherry

Meet Garrett our handsome June ambassador

I met Garrett and his mom Michelle on a very hot
Saturday morning. At first I thought he was shy,
just give him a little bit of time and you will get to see the cool, fun Garrett
Garrett just celebrated his 12th birthday
Here is what Garrett's mother shared with me.
Garrett is such a loving and caring child whose feelings are easily hurt
because he wears them on his sleeve.
He has never participated in sports but he has started
to show an interest in basketball within the last 6 months.

He is an old soul trapped in a little boys body.
He is very passionate about food and loves to eat.
He has started exercising and is scared no one will like him due to him being overweight –
he does have self image issues however when his older brother told him
that he needed to get in shape his response was “Bubba I'm round that is a shape” –

he is a very funny person with a great sense of humor,
no one can crack jokes and make me laugh like he can
his sense of humor is often very dry which reminds of my mother.

One time we were at the new water park and a kid called him fat
and the father just laughed about it –
it bothered Garrett for a little while but he soon got over it
as I told him that he was perfect to me and he would lose weight in time.

His next hurdle for now is starting middle school.
That happens this week and he is both looking forward to it and scared at the same time.

Garrett thank you so much for being apart of the I am beautiful project.
My wish for you is to have the best school year ever.
Keep that fun spirit and that awesome smile on your face.
Thank you so much for your bravery and courage in sharing your story.
hugs, Cherry

Meet Miss Mary our " I am Beautiful " ambassador for May 2015

First let me say that meeting Mary and her mother has been one of my favorite moments since starting back doing family photography. They traveled to Savannah from Charleston, SC to do the session and I could not be more thankful.
The blessing I received that afternoon spending time with Mary will forever hold a very special place in my heart.

Here is Mary and her mother's take on the day.

Fourteen-year-old Mary Bey is hot and exhausted when she climbs out of her mother’s grey Honda Civic.
It has been a long drive, yet she offers a weary smile upon meeting her photographer, Cherry.
Mary is a teen living with Tourette’s syndrome, a neurological disorder that gives the sufferer strong urges to do repetitive sounds and movements, called tics. Despite her bubbly, unique personality, this condition along with other minor issues such as ADHD and her hyper, peculiar ways have been the cause of daily bullying since she entered middle school. Today Mary will be part of something special, part of a project that selects one bullied child each month to be photographed for free, given a fantastic photoshoot to tell them something that have never been told before, never been allowed to believe.
I am beautiful...

The idea that this magic called “photography” could make her beautiful seems impossible at first as she awkwardly stands in front of a camera.  After several pictures are taken, however, something changes. After many half-hearted attempts to pose, she looks directly into the camera. And her eyes, big, blue-green, take on a surreal quality -Mysterious, penetrating, desirable, like those of a model.
For the first time in a long time, Mary feels beautiful.
“You’re a natural,” The photographer tells her as she snaps yet another picture.
The time seems to fly by for both of them, and before you know it the two are laughing and joking, and Mary begins to open up about herself, revealing she is somewhat of an artist herself, possessing a talent for writing and drawing as well as a sense of humor.
“Sorry,” She says jokingly, pointing at the camera which has begun to twitch slightly as it tries to zoom in.
"Guess I gave your camera Tourette’s .”
At which all I could do was giggle.. Mary has ways of saying things that would totally catch me off guard and just crack me up... I wish I could remember all of her little Mary~isums..
She kept me on my toes and I loved every moment with her.

Mary does however have a serious side, and when asked why she thinks others bully her, here’s what she has to say.
“Well, I think it doesn’t have anything to do with my looks, nor my personality.
It’s the parts of me that are different, the parts that they can’t cope with that causes them to be so mean. They’re too big of wimps to step outside of their comfort zone and be friends with a freak like me.  And you know what, that’s their loss.”
I could not agree more, totally their loss..
Thank you so much to Mary and her mother for being apart of the "I am Beautiful project".
Mary my wish is you will always believe in yourself. That you will continue to share that wicked little sense of humor of yours and that you never, ever forget that you are BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you so much for your bravery and courage in sharing your story.
Always remember ~ You are strong, you are brave, you are loved and you are beautiful.
big hugs, Cherry

Spending the afternoon with Miss Kayden was a blast she was smiling and laughing the entire time.

She wants to be
an artist and make the world a prettier place.

well she is already doing that just by being here.

What are you proud of about yourself ?
 I get straight A's, E's and S's

 Who are your heros/mentors ?
That would be my mom because she helps me with everything.
So does my Mamaw.

What does bullying mean to you ?
It's a very sad feeling about yourself, about things you can't help like my teeth.

When did you first realize you were being bullied ?

How did it make you feel ?
 Very, Very Sad

Have you found help in dealing with bullying ?
No but, an idea is to just compliment them instead of hurting them like they did you and walk away.

What would you like the world to know about you ?
That I hope everyone will know bullying is wrong,
please stop bullying, it's a hurtful thing !

Kayden asks that we all encourage others not to bully
and I think that is a really good idea.

Sweet Kayden I hope that you will always remember the fun
we had together and that you are beautiful
from the top of your pretty little head to the tips of your toes.
hugs, Cherry
